FAQ

Who are we?

We are the Thinking, Acting, and Neurodevelopment Lab at UVic. Our lab focuses on understanding how adults and children think, learn, and process information throughout development.

Where are we located?

We run studies out of the UVic Child Development Lab (CDL), a shared space among several research groups studying different aspects of child development in UVic’s Department of Psychology. CDL is located in the Cornett Building, Room B032.

What do the studies involve?

Our studies are designed as simple, engaging activities that parents and children often find interesting and enjoyable. Most of our research takes place in person at our lab. For adult participants, studies usually involve activities similar to those used in our child studies, with tasks tailored to adults. For infant studies, babies typically sit on a caregiver’s lap or in an infant seat while viewing puppet shows, images, or short animated videos. With permission, sessions are recorded so researchers can measure natural responses, such as how long infants look at or reach toward different displays. Studies with older children are usually presented as interactive games, conversations, or question-and-answer activities. Children may be asked to describe pictures on a computer screen or watch short videos and animations. All activities are age-appropriate, child-friendly, and designed to make participation a positive experience for both children and their families.

How does this tell us what my child knows? / Will I receive the results of my child’s performance?

Our studies help us understand how children learn about the world and other people. By observing how children respond to games, stories, and activities, we can learn about how they think, learn from experience, and understand others’ thoughts, feelings, and intentions. We are interested in understanding general patterns of child development, not evaluating individual children. We do not provide diagnoses, assessments, or measures of ability. However, if you are interested in your child’s responses during the study, we would be happy to provide video recordings. We also send periodic newsletters to keep families updated on what we discover through our research.

Will I be with my child while the study takes place?

Parents and/or guardians will be with their children at all times.

How long do studies take?

Each study takes about 20-30 minutes, but we will schedule families for a 60-minute visit so that we have time for your child to get used to our space and so that we can fully explain the study to you and answer any questions you might have. Children are welcome to take breaks for any reason at any time throughout the session.

How many times will I be asked to participate?

Participation only requires a single visit and does not commit you to any other visits. If you and your child are interested in participating in more studies, we can contact you for different studies as your child grows. We will always ask if you’d like to be contacted.

Can I bring my child’s siblings with us to a study?

Yes! Our qualified research assistants are happy to babysit any children that may come along during your visit to our lab.

How do I get to the lab? Is parking available?

We reimburse parking for parents and will meet you in the parking lot to escort you and your child to the lab. We are located on the University of Victoria campus. For your convenience, click here for directions and a map!
